University News: The Varsity Cup returns to Universities in 2022

PURCO SA wishes the organizers and players of The Varsity Cup a successful 2022 tournament and looks forward to an exciting and thrilling rugby tournament. This is the tournament where the buddy stars are spotted and nurtured for future opportunities for a professional rugby career. Good Luck!

The New Year has just kicked in and the announcement that the Varsity Cup is returning to universities in 2022 came today, on Friday, 14 January 2022. This announcement comes in for the first time since 2020, after the intervarsity tournament stopped following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament will be hosted around the country at the different Universities that participate, with the first kick off taking place on 14 February 2022, with limited number of fans allowed entry at the stadiums.

“The South African sporting community has endured a tough time of it over the past two years, so it’s great to see the Varsity Cup returning to the participating Universities across the nation,” tournament manager Xhanti-Lomzi Nesi said. We’re particularly excited to have the fans back in the stadiums. We’re expecting a fiercely competitive tournament. Two teams will be relegated to the Varsity Shield at the end of the 2022 season, so there is certainly a lot on the line.’ Nesi continued.’”

“The competition kicks off on 14 February with all 10 teams in action over the course of nine rounds, with no byes. After the league phase of the tournament, the top four sides on the log will advance to the semi-finals. The seven-team Varsity Shield will commence on 4 March, with matches staged at a single venue each match-day from round one to round six, with the home teams hosting games in round seven. At the end of the round-robin phase, the top four teams on the log will qualify for the semi-finals.” (Source: SA Rugby Mag - https://www.sarugbymag.co.za/varsity-cup-returns-to-university-campuses-...)
